Bien que ce ne soit certainement pas l’un des films les plus accessibles de Coen Brothers, Un homme sérieux est souvent loué pour son équilibre de comédie noire et d’esprit tranchant. Intense et difficile à regarder, L’expérience de la prison de Stanford est un incontournable.

Réalisé par Francis Lee dans son premier long métrage, Le pays de Dieu est un conte obsédant d’amour et de perte dans la campagne anglaise. Le film suit Johnny Saxby (Josh O’Connor), un jeune homme qui vit dans sa ferme familiale avec son père Martin et sa grand-mère Deidre. Johnny s’occupe de la majeure partie de la ferme par lui-même, son père incapable de l’aider après avoir subi un AVC et sa grand-mère a quitté la vie agricole. La vie de Johnny est un gâchis, buvant beaucoup et ayant des relations sexuelles avec des hommes pendant son temps libre. Lorsque les actions de Johnny entraînent la perte d’un veau, Martin engage une aide sous la forme de Gheorghe (Alec Secăreanu), un ouvrier agricole roumain qui est initialement traité durement par Johnny. Lorsque Johnny fait référence à Gheorghe par une insulte, les deux hommes se retrouvent dans une bagarre qui devient rapidement sexuelle. Avec la nature de leur relation, Johnny doit apprendre rapidement qui il est, moins il fait face aux conséquences d’un cœur brisé. Dans ce nouveau film Netflix Original, le réalisateur Jeremy Saulnier (Ruine bleue, Chambre verte) suit un expert du loup nommé Russell Core (Jeffrey Wright), qui est appelé dans un village de l’Alaska pour aider à traquer les loups qui semblent responsables de la mort de trois jeunes enfants. Le film a reçu de solides critiques, et bien qu’une suite ait été discutée pendant des années, elle n’a jamais été réalisée.

Le premier des deux films de Noah Baumbach sur cette liste, Frances Ha ne plaira pas à tous les lecteurs de cette liste. Le film a été critiqué comme sans but, mais pour ceux avec qui il se connecte, Frances Ha représente une modernisation des principes et des idées présentés pour la première fois dans les films de l’ère de la Nouvelle Vague française des années 1960. De l’esthétique du film en noir et blanc au voyage impromptu à Paris à mi-parcours du film, l’inspiration de titres comme À bout de souffle et Les 400 coups est partout dans ce titre, co-écrit par le réalisateur Baumbach et la star Greta Gerwig (qui a plus tard apporté son esprit et son talent pour l’écriture à 2017 acclamé par la critique Lady Bird). Les films de Baumbach sont généralement assez sombres, et cela fait un excellent mélange avec la luminosité de Gerwig et le sens de la joie trouvé dans l’obscurité.

Une entrée par excellence dans le catalogue des grands films sportifs américains, Miracle raconte l’histoire de l’équipe de hockey olympique des États-Unis de 1980, de sa formation à son entraînement et, finalement, sa victoire contre l’équipe de hockey russe au plus fort de la guerre froide. L’histoire commence lorsque l’entraîneur-chef de l’Université du Minnesota, Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) rencontre le Comité olympique américain pour discuter des stratégies pour gagner les Jeux olympiques de 1980. Brooks incite le groupe à choisir des joueurs amateurs plutôt que des athlètes de niveau professionnel, ce qui fait douter que l’équipe américaine ira loin dans sa quête de médailles d’or. Notre deuxième conte de Noah Baumbach est également son plus récent film et un original de Netflix. Les histoires de Meyerowitz (nouvelles et sélectionnées) raconte l’histoire de trois enfants: Danny, Matthew et Jean Meyerowitz, joués ici par Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller et Elizabeth Marvel, respectivement. Danny et Jean sont des frères et sœurs, avec Matthew comme demi-frère, tous liés par leur relation difficile avec leur père Harold (Dustin Hoffman). Bien que les trois enfants soient relativement éloignés l’un de l’autre, la prochaine rétrospective de carrière de leur père les amène tous les trois à New York pour se réunir, se chamailler et faire face aux problèmes de leur vie. Malgré l’importance de Sandler et Stiller, ne vous attendez pas à ce que ce soit une émeute de rire; comme les autres contes de Baumbach, c’est d’abord le drame, puis la comédie, bien que les critiques aient salué le virage dramatique de Sandler ici comme son meilleur depuis Punch Drunk Love.

Un hybride action-horreur pour les âges, Chambre verte est le troisième film du célèbre réalisateur Jeremy Saulnier. Le film suit les membres d’un groupe punk, les Ain’t Rights, alors qu’ils voyagent à travers le Pacifique Nord-Ouest en tournée. Après l’annulation de leur concert, un animateur de radio locale organise une émission par l’intermédiaire de son cousin Daniel en tant que bar skinhead néonazi dans les bois à l’extérieur de Portland. Lorsque l’ami d’Ip Lin ne revient pas d’un combat, Ip commence une quête pour détruire l’armée japonaise à tout prix, même si elle se détruit dans le processus. Le film est vaguement basé sur la vie réelle d’Ip Man, le grand maître Wing Chun et l’homme qui a formé Bruce Lee.

Réalisé et écrit par Richard Curtis (L’amour en fait, quatre mariages et un enterrement), À propos du temps est une comédie romantique teintée d’éléments de science-fiction, tissant ensemble une histoire charmante qui livre une grande histoire d’amour et un conte père / fils. Quand Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) a 21 ans, son père (Bill Nighy) lui dit un secret: les hommes de leur famille peuvent voyager dans le temps. Bien qu’il ne puisse pas changer l’histoire, Tim décide d’améliorer sa vie en obtenant une petite amie. Il rencontre Mary (Rachel McAdams), tombe amoureux et gagne enfin son cœur viun voyage dans le temps et un peu rusé. Cependant, alors que sa vie inhabituelle progresse, Tim constate que sa capacité spéciale ne peut pas le protéger, lui et ceux qu’il aime, des problèmes de la vie ordinaire.

Réalisé par Lenny Abrahamson (Franc) et adapté du roman du même nom, Chambre raconte l’histoire de Joy Newsome, 24 ans, et de son fils Jack, 5 ans, qui vivent dans une remise verrouillée appelée «chambre». À l’insu du jeune Jack, ils sont détenus en captivité par «Old Nick», un homme qui a kidnappé Joy sept ans auparavant et qui est le père biologique de Jack. Joy essaie d’équilibrer sa propre santé mentale tout en étant autant une mère que possible pour Jack, bien que Jack pense que le monde se compose de «chambre» et de télévision, et pas grand-chose d’autre. Lorsque Joy parvient à élaborer un plan pour que Jack s’échappe et alerte les autorités, cela déclenche une réaction en chaîne d’événements qui enverra Joy et Jack en spirale, alors qu’ils tentent de s’adapter à un nouveau monde.

Un film Netflix Original récent, Mudbound raconte l’histoire de deux anciens combattants de la Seconde Guerre mondiale vivant dans le Mississippi rural après la fin de la guerre. Le film commence lorsque Henry McAllen (Jason Clarke) et sa femme Laura (Carey Mulligan) achètent une ferme aux côtés du frère d’Henry Jamie et de leur père, Pappy (Jonathan Banks, Breaking Bad et Tu ferais mieux d’appeler Saul). La famille Jackson, dirigée par Ronsel Jackson (Jason Mitchell) travaille la ferme pour les McAllens, jusqu’à ce que Ronsel et Jamie soient retirés pour combattre dans la guerre. À son retour, Jamie traite du SSPT et de l’alcoolisme, tandis que Ronsel s’occupe de se réadapter au racisme du Sud après sa vie en Europe. Alors que Ronsel et Jamie commencent à nouer une amitié, malgré les objections de Pappy, la lutte pour se réadapter à la vie américaine menace de briser les deux familles. Mudbound est le premier film Netflix nominé aux Academy Awards, pour huit prix aux Oscars 2018.

Les fans du drame d’action de 2011 Conduire étaient ravis lorsque Ryan Gosling a fait équipe avec ConduireLe directeur de Nicolas Winding Refn pour 2013 Seul Dieu pardonne, un film qui présentait une bande-annonce qui faisait ressembler l’ensemble du film à un retour à la violence viscérale à combustion lente présentée dans Conduire. Ce n’est pas nécessairement trop loin de la base, mais nous mentirions si nous disions Seul Dieu pardonne joué comme un autre film dans le Conduire canon. Le film suit Julian Thompson (Gosling), un trafiquant de drogue en Thaïlande dont la mère (Kristin Scott Thomas) l’envoie en mission pour venger le meurtre de son frère aîné, un criminel qui a été tué après avoir battu une prostituée jusqu’à sa mort. Le film a été hué après sa première au Festival de Cannes (alors que certains ont fait une ovation debout) et présente des scènes controversées de violence et de sexualité. Depuis cette première, le film a continué de présenter une réaction polarisée de la part des critiques et du public; même cinq ans plus tard, cela reste une montre difficile.

Beaucoup de gens se souviennent Space Jam, le premier film sorti en salles Looney Tunes film, soit à travers des lunettes de nostalgie ou ironiquement. Le film fut un succès au box-office mais fut critiqué par les critiques à sa sortie. Moins de gens se souviennent du suivi de ce film, Looney Tunes: de retour en action, mais c’est malheureux, c’est sans aucun doute le meilleur des deux films. Réalisé par Joe Dante, l’un des réalisateurs les plus inventifs et sous-estimés d’Hollywood (Gremlins et Gremlins 2, Les «Burbs», Petits soldats), Looney Tunes: de retour en action est beaucoup plus en ton avec les dessins originaux. Bien que l’intrigue soit compliquée et un peu en désordre, toute l’expérience de regarder le film rappelle celle de ces courts métrages classiques. Avec beaucoup de gags, de blagues stupides et de moments conçus uniquement pour le rire, le film – qui met également en vedette Brendan Fraser et Jenna Elfman en tant que personnages principaux – mérite d’être revu.

Et qui a dit que la comédie romantique était morte? L’un des meilleurs films de 2014, Enfant évident est une comédie romantique indie fantastique et aérée de la réalisatrice Gillian Robespierre et de la star Jenny Slate. Basé sur le court-métrage de Robespierre du même nom (qui mettait également en vedette Slate), Enfant évident suit Donna Stern, une comédienne de New York qui est jetée par son petit ami dans les toilettes de son club de comédie habituel. Après avoir avoué qu’il la quittait pour l’un de ses meilleurs amis, Donna commence à tourner, à boire beaucoup et à bombarder son prochain set. Quand elle rencontre Max (Jake Lacy), les deux ont immédiatement une connexion, ce qui conduit à un raccordement ivre dans lequel ils ne parviennent pas à utiliser la protection. Quand Donna apprend qu’elle est enceinte, elle décide de se faire avorter. Une rencontre fortuite avec Max laisse Donna du mal à lui parler de l’avortement imminent, surtout après avoir mentionné son rêve d’être grand-père un jour.

L’original Netflix le plus sous-estimé de 2018, Vie privée est l’histoire déchirante de Richard et Rachel (Paul Giamatti et Kathryn Hahn, respectivement), un couple d’âge moyen qui essaie désespérément d’avoir un enfant ensemble. Après plusieurs tentatives infructueuses d’insémination artificielle, ils apprennent que Richard a un blocage qui l’empêche de produire du sperme, le forçant à subir une opération chirurgicale qui lui fait endetter 10 000 $ à son frère Charlie. Pendant ce temps, le couple apprend également que l’enfant qu’ils cherchaient à adopter, après avoir été jumelé avec une adolescente enceinte de Little Rock qui cherchait à abandonner son enfant, a cessé de les contacter. Le film, le troisième long métrage de la réalisatrice Tamara Jenkins (Les sauvages, Bidonvilles de Beverly Hills) a été acclamé par la critique lors de sa sortie.

Okja est un autre film exclusif à Netflix et le deuxième film de langue anglaise réalisé par Bong Joon-ho, le réalisateur de films sud-coréens L’hôte, Mère (dont aucun ne doit être confondu avec les films américains du même nom), et Snowpiercer. Comme Snowpiercer, Okja est un film d’action-aventure qui utilise son intrigue comme métaphore majeure pour une leçon de la vie réelle, cette fois concernant l’agriculture industrielle et le concept d’environnementalisme. Le film n’est peut-être pas subtil avec ses messages, mais cela ne l’empêche pas d’être un excellent récit fascinant et infiniment triste. Le personnage principal est joué ici par l’actrice sud-coréenne Ahn Seo-hyun, mais ne pensez pas que vous ne verrez pas de visages reconnaissables. Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito et Jake Gyllenhaal se présentent tous parmi leurs homologues sud-coréens.

A24 s’est fait un nom en tant que studio grâce à son flair indépendant, mais sa division des films d’horreur ne doit pas être méconnue. Avec autant de films d’horreur fabriqués comme des machines à effrayer les sauts, le studio a fait un effort solide pour créer des thrillers d’horreur terrifiants et au rythme lent, et tout a commencé avec La sorcière, le premier film du réalisateur Robert Eggers. Se déroulant en 1630 en Nouvelle-Angleterre et parlé dans un anglais d’époque, le film suit alors que la panique et le désespoir enveloppent un fermier, sa femme et leurs enfants lorsque leur plus jeune fils Samuel disparaît. La famille attribue sa disparition à Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy, dans ses grands débuts au cinéma), la fille aînée qui était censée regarder le garçon au moment de sa disparition. Avec la suspicion et la paranoïa montantes, les frères et sœurs jumeaux Mercy et Jonas soupçonnent leur sœur aînée de sorcellerie, testant la foi et la loyauté du clan en cours de route.

Le film controversé du réalisateur Harmony Korine, Spring Breakers est une montre difficile, quelle que soit votre approche du film. Après quatre étudiants qui descendent dans une vie de crime entourant les vacances de printemps, le film commence lorsque Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Faith (Selena Gomez), Brit (Ashley Benson) et Cotty (Rachel Korine) se retrouvent à court d’argent pour assister leurs prochaines vacances. Après avoir volé un restaurant et se dirigeant vers la Floride, ils ont été arrêtés par un parti local avant d’être renfloués par un rappeur et trafiquant de drogue nommé Alien (James Franco). Lentement, les filles sont séparées par le mode de vie des gangs, entraînant une rupture dans leur groupe et la corruption de deux des filles.

Dans Blue Valentine, Le film dramatique romantique de Derek Cianfrance de 2010, les téléspectateurs regardent une romance tomber de la grâce, racontée de manière non linéaire et avec autant de chagrin que vous pouvez l’imaginer. Le film suit Dean (Ryan Gosling) et Cindy (Michelle Williams), un couple marié qui mène une vie modeste dans un quartier calme avec leur fille Frankie et un chien. Le film fait des allers-retours entre les premiers jours de leur relation et le présent, alors que leur relation s’effondre lentement à la suite d’une série de revers. Réalisé par le célèbre cinéaste visionnaire Tim Burton et mettant en vedette Johnny Depp dans le rôle du légendaire chocolatier Willy Wonka, Charlie et la chocolaterie est une adaptation en 2005 du livre pour enfants classique du même nom. Décidant de lui donner une voix féminine, le système d’exploitation se surnomme Samantha et Theodore commence à se lier avec elle. Le film suit Théodore alors qu’il développe une relation avec son IA et qu’il apprend à grandir et à s’adapter en tant que personne.

Le huitième et dernier film de Quentin Tarantino, Les huit haineux est un western à part entière du réalisateur légendaire, situé dans l’ère post-guerre civile des États-Unis lors d’un violent blizzard à l’extérieur de Red Rock, Wyoming. At three hours and with an NC-17 rating, the film isn’t an easy watch, but Blue is the Warmest Color is one of the best romance films of the past decade, and is absolutely worth watching in its entirety.

The classic stoner comedy Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle is perfect for watching on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and now that it’s back on Netflix, you can hang out with a bag of your favorite fast food burgers and do just that. Nerdy accountant Harold (John Cho) and his irrepressible friend, Kumar (Kal Penn), get stoned watching television and find themselves utterly bewitched by a commercial for White Castle. Convinced there must be one nearby, the two set out on a late-night odyssey that takes them deep into New Jersey. Somehow, the boys manage to run afoul of rednecks, cops and even a car-stealing Neil Patrick Harris before getting anywhere near their beloved sliders.

Avant Enfants des hommes et La gravité, before Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and 2018’s Roma, il y avait Y Tu Mama Tambien, the fourth film by Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron and his breakout project. The film follows Julio and Tenoch, two 17-year-old boys who find themselves beginning to flourish into adulthood. The two best friends spend their summer vacation heading out on a cross-country trip with each other, alongside an older woman whom they meet on the trip. Without the boys’ girlfriends around, the two live their lives as bachelors. Filled with sex, drug use, and plenty of joy in the road trip portion of the film, it’s the perfect time to catch up with Cuaron’s work prior to watching Roma on Netflix.

One of the most underrated films of this decade, Edgar Wright’s (Hot Fuzz, Baby Driver) Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a visual triumph, a funny and charming story that wears its heart on its sleeve. The film follows bass guitarist and 22-year-old Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera, in a pitch-perfect casting), who is floundering in his adulthood without a job after being crushed by his ex-girlfriend. Now dating a high schooler, he seems content in just letting his life pass him by, when he runs into Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a girl new to Toronto who seems to be, quite literally, the girl of Scott’s dreams. A visual triumph, pulling direct inspiration from video games, anime, and the graphic novel this series is based on, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a perfect action-comedy.

Orson Welles had no shortage of long-lost projects, including don Quichotte et The Merchant of Venice, among other projects. One of the most famous unfinished projects was The Other Side of the Wind, originally slated to come out in the 1970s after six years of starts and stops in production. The film acts as a parody of old Hollywood filmmaking and the New Hollywood style of the 70s, shot as a mockumentary and in black and white—both uncommon traits for that decade. After sitting on a shelf for over forty years, the film has arrived as a new project from Welles distributed by Netflix, and by all accounts, the long-lost project is an excellent final marking on the late director. The film, which follows a director returning to Hollywood from Europe to finish his comeback movie, is delightfully meta and well-worth a watch.

Most true crime documentaries revolve around murder or other similarly-grim crimes. In the truest sense of that definition of the genre, Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened is not a true crime documentary. There’s no murder to solve, no kidnapping involved in the film. Yet from a certain sense, Fyre tells the story of a white collar crime often not shown in true crime documentaries. Following a scam-filled music festival that preyed on rich millennials on Instagram, the film follows the building of the Fyre Festival, from its induction to the nightmare of its downfall. It’s gained a ton of popularity on social media, and as a Netflix Original, you can catch it anytime streaming on Netflix.

A brand-new Netflix original film and a leading contender for the Best Picture nominations at the 2019 Oscars, Roma is Alfonso Cuaron’s first film since his 2013 acclaimed film La gravité. A semi-autobiographical film and Cuaron’s first Spanish-language film since Y Tu Mamá También in 2001, Roma follows the life of a live-in housekeeper to a middle-class family in 1970s Mexico City. With a cast of mostly-unknown and up and coming actors, Cuaron uses his experience as an acclaimed filmmaker to make his most personal film to date. The title comes from the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City where the film is set.

Produced in 2006 by ImageMovers, the same company behind such animated hits as The Polar Express and Beowulf, Monster House is an animated film brought to life by director Gil Kenan, working from a script co-written, notably, by Dan Harmon (Communauté, Rick and Morty). The film follows three kids, who believe that their neighbor’s house is a living creature trying to eat kids alive. When DJ Walters’ parents are away for the weekend, they accidentally send their neighbor to the hospital after he has a heart attack. When his house continues to eat people who approach the residence, DJ, Chowder, and Jenny Bennett attempt to destroy the house in order to save trick-or-treaters on Halloween.

A forgotten classic, The Mask of Zorro serves as both a reboot and a sequel to all preexisting Zorro movies and shows before it. The film follows Zorro, better known as Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins), who receives word that his greatest enemy Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson) has returned. After being imprisoned for 20 years, Zorro has grown old and tired, unable to continue the fight. Instead, he trains Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas) to be his successor, transforming Murrieta from an aimless drunk to a master of fighting. Meanwhile, Montero, who has secretly raised Diego’s daughter (Catherine Zeta-Jones) as his own, begins plotting to rob California of its gold.

In the hit sequel to 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph and Vanellope return to set out on a brand-new adventure. Though Ralph has been having a great time since the events of the last film, things have gotten a bit stale for Vanellope. When the arcade Ralph and his friends find themselves living in gains access to a router, the pair of friends travel from the surge protector to the World Wide Web, making for a journey through memes, YouTube videos, and the world of Disney. A film about staying friends even when you’re becoming new people Ralph Breaks the Internet is funnier and more charming than its early trailers might have led you to believe.

The conclusion of the “Death trilogy,” Alejandro González Iñárritu’s collection of films from 2000 to 2006, Babel is an ensemble drama film starring, among many others, Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Elle Fanning, Adriana Barraza, and many more. Edited into segments, the film focuses on four groups of characters, with events being revealed out of chronological order. The film focuses on a single accident that connects groups from across three different continents: two young Moroccan goatherds, a vacationing American couple, a deaf Japanese teen and her father, and a Mexican nanny who takes her young charges across a border without parental permission.

From director David Mackenzie (Starred Up, Outlaw King) directed this Best Picture-nominated film in 2016 with a script from Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Wind River) follow two brothers who work together to try to save their family ranch from foreclosure. Toby and Tanner haven’t led perfect lives, but to accomplish their goal, they’ll have to turn to a life of crime in order to raise the necessary money through a series of heists. Their only problem is Marcus (Jeff Bridges), a Texas Ranger weeks away from retirement and paired with his soon-to-be replacement. As the two brothers plan out their final robbery, they’ll be forced to fight back against the law, who’s trying to take both brothers down as quickly as possible.

In Steven Spielberg’s classic throwback to serials of the 1930s and 1940s, Les aventuriers de l’arche perdue (later known as Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) introduced viewers to the now-famous professor-turned-archaeologist-turned-adventurer. All four Jones films are streaming on Netflix, but if you only choose one, the original still stands as one of the best adventure films of the last fifty years. Harrison Ford stars as Indiana Jones, who finds himself in over his head when he’s up against a group of Nazis trying to find the Ark of the Covenant, a religious relic said to contain supernatural powers. Alongside his ex-girlfriend Marion, Jones will have to try to reach the Covenant before the Nazis in order to ensure its power doesn’t fall into the hands of evil.

Following the conclusion of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, the group didn’t wait long to begin releasing theatrical films expanding on their now-legendary comedy chops. The first of three original films, Monty Python and the Holy Grail continues to be praised for being a groundbreaking film in the world of independent comedy. Though original reviews of the film were mixed upon release, the group’s loving parody of the legend of King Arthur has become beloved for its weird sense of humor, it’s ability to spin out of control at all times, the meta-awareness of the film, and its legendary ending. Though some viewers prefer the successor, Life of Brian, if you’ve never seen Holy Grail, now is the time to do it.

The newest film from legendary directing duo Joel and Ethan Coen, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is in many ways both a return to form and a departure for the usual way the brothers make their films. Originally announced as a six-part miniseries for Netflix, the Coen brothers return to the western genre for the first time since True Grit to create an anthology film following six tales, all with similar themes of betrayal and death in the Old West. From the story of a singing, bloodthirsty Roy Rogers-type named Buster Scruggs to the tale of a young man with no arms or legs and his impresario friend, each of the six stories tells of tragedy from greed, lust, and murder.

A brand-new Netflix original film, Dumplin’ was released at the tail end of 2018 quietly onto Netflix. Unlike a film like Boîte à oiseaux, which saw massive promotion during the holidays, Dumplin’ went more unnoticed by fans, and it’s time to correct that. Based on a young adult novel of the same name, Dumplin’ follows a plus-size teenage daughter (Danielle Macdonald) whose mother is a former beauty queen (Jennifer Aniston). When she signs up for her mother’s pageant as a protest against the idea of mainstream beauty contests. When other contestants follow in her footsteps, however, things escalate quickly, leading to a full-on revolution of the pageant in Dumpin’s small Texas town.

Armando Iannucci is no stranger to political black comedy: his landmark British comedy series L’épaisseur de celui-ci didn’t just bring In the Loop into existence—it was also developed by Iannucci himself into Veep aux Etats-Unis. And while the director might focus primarily on television, 2017’s The Death of Stalin shows that the filmmaker continues to be a strong voice in feature films. The film presents a fictionalized account of the power struggle that took place in Russia following the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953. With an all-star cast including Steve Buscemi, Paddy Considine, Rupert Friend, Jason Isaacs, Michael Palin, Paul Whitehouse, and Jeffrey Tambor, The Death of Stalin is Iannucci’s grimmest film yet.

Yorgos Lanthimos mastered the balance of absurdist humor and dystopian fiction in his 2015 film The Lobster, starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz, after managing to grab the attention of critics and moviegoers alike with his 2010 film Dogtooth. The Lobster is set in a dystopian universe where single people are given just 45 days to find a romantic partner before being turned into animals. When David’s wife leaves him for another man, he attempts to form a relationship in his hotel to avoid being turned into a lobster, his animal of choice. At the hotel, he makes acquaintances who are also attempting to find love at the hotel, all while living in a society with byzantine rules. Anyone with a desert-dry sense of humor will enjoy this.

Directed by David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water), Outlaw King is a must-watch for any fans of Un cœur brave. Essentially taking place nearly directly after the conclusion of the 1990s Mel Gibson hit, the film follows Robert the Bruce (Chris Pine), as he, John Comyn, and other Scottish nobility surrender to the English outside of Stirling Castle. When King Edward I agrees to give the Scottish nobility their land back in exchange for homage, Bruce is wedded to the king’s granddaughter, Elizabeth de Burgh. Following years of unhappiness and unrest between the British and Scottish, however, Bruce is forced to lead another revolt—and pays dearly by being led into exile from England.

The Lonely Island’s most recent film, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, is a modern comedy masterpiece, but if you haven’t seen the trio’s first film, Hot Rod, you’re really doing yourself a disservice. The film follows Rod Kimball (Andy Samberg), a man who has been performing stunts since he was a child, thanks to his belief that his now-deceased father worked for Evel Knievel’s crew. When Rod’s step-father Frank becomes ill, Rod puts aside his hatred for the man and starts to raise money for the heart operation by planning his largest stunt yet—all while trying to win Frank’s respect. In addition to Samberg and fellow Lonely Island members Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer (who also directs), the film also stars Bill Hader, Danny McBride, Isla Fisher, and Ian McShane. Hot Rod does a great job adapting the Lonely Island’s sense of humor for the big screen, with off-beat, irreverent jokes and often surreal humor. You’ll never hear “cool beans” the same way again.

Les bêtes d’aucune nation is a Netflix Original directed by acclaimed filmmaker Cary Fukunaga, whose work on the first season of Vrai détective has been praised endlessly online. In his third feature-length film as director, Les bêtes d’aucune nation tells the story of a civil war in Africa, as a fierce warlord (Idris Elba) trains a young orphan named Agu (Abraham Attah) how to fight in order to join his group of guerrilla soldiers. The film is terrifyingly bleak, following Agu’s loss of innocence as his brother is taken from him. The film was praised by critics for its stark portrayals of the horrors of war, and though the film was ignored by the Oscars (largely thanks to their distaste for Netflix Original films), Idris Elba did receive a nomination at the Golden Globes for his role as the Commander. The next time you catch Fukunaga making a feature film, he’ll be behind the camera of Bond 25.

The stone-cold classic fantasy-martial arts film (known as wuxia in China), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a rare foreign hit. Despite its reliance on subtitles and the appearance of its effects, the film was a massive hit worldwide, critically-acclaimed, and helped to pave the way for director Ang Lee to continue working for the next twenty years with a full blank check. The film stars Chow Yun-Fat as a Qing Dynasty warrior, who gives his sword to his lover (Michelle Yeoh) for safekeeping. When the sword, named Green Destiny, is stolen, things quickly spiral out of control. A sequel, made sixteen years later for Netflix, is also streaming, but we recommend you stick with the original while it’s on Netflix.

Yes, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is a horror film, designed to be as bloody and graphic as possible. It’s also an incredibly funny film, a horror-comedy that’s just as focused on delivering frights as it is laughs. The film stars Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Tyler Labine (Reaper, Deadbeat) as two well-meaning hillbillies who purchased a lakefront cabin together in the woods. At a gas station outside of camp, the two run into several college students going camping for the weekend. Tucker (Tudyk) pushes Dale (Labine) to talk to Allison, one of the main girls, but ends up simply frightening her instead. While Tucker and Dale work on reconstructing their cabin, the nearby campers go skinny-dipping together, only for Allison to hit her head and be saved by Dale. While she’s recuperating with Tucker and Dale, the rest of the college students trick themselves into believing that she’s been kidnapped, and attempt to rescue her—only for everything to go wrong.

Directed by acclaimed South Korean film director Bong Joon-ho (Okja, The Host), Snowpiercer is a 2013 action film starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton. The film follows Curtis (Evans), a passenger aboard the Snowpiercer, a train riding throughout the now-frozen globe eternally. Curtis is pushed to his breaking point, and he, along with the others in the back of the train, plan a revolution to take out both Minister Mason (Tilda Swinton) and Wilford (Ed Harris), the inventor of the train. The film’s action is well-shot, and the class messaging is strong and delivers on clear themes. Of course, the real stars of the show here are both Evans and Swinton, who are at their best in their respective roles.

From acclaimed director Mike Mills (Beginners), 20th Century Women tells the story of Jamie, a semi-autobiographical character based on Mills’ own childhood experiences with his mother. The film is set in 1979 Santa Barbara, California and follows Jamie(Lucas Jade Zumann), his mother Dorothea, and two younger women who exist in Jamie’s life—Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields’ home, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a savvy a provocative teenage neighbor who often shares a bed with Jamie. When Dorothea feels as though she can no longer connect with her now-teenage son, she asks both Abbie and Julie to help raise her son with her. Also on-board is another tenant in Dorothea’s household, William (Billy Crudup), a handyman who once lived on a commune. Following Beginners, which also told the semi-autobiographical story of Mills’ father coming out of the closet in his mid-70s, 20th Century Women is a great pairing and, arguably, an even better film.

One of the few film adaptations of a novel to be directed by the author, Le monde de Charlie is one of the best coming-of-age films ever made. The film follows Charlie (Logan Lerman), a socially awkward teen who has recently begun his freshman year of high school after being discharged from a mental health care institution. When he grabs the attention of Sam (Emma Watson), a free-spirited senior, and her stepbrother Patrick (Ezra Miller), the two help Charlie discover the joys of friendship, first love, music and more, all while Charlie’s English teacher (Paul Rudd) inspires the young student to become a writer. However, as Charlie’s friends begin to prepare to leave for college, his depression threatens to shatter his newfound confidence.

Often considered one of Tarantino’s best late-period works, Inglourious Basterds is a tense, comedic, and bloody alternate history of World War II, following two assassination attempts against Hitler. Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of Jewish soldiers to commit violent acts of retribution against the Nazis, including the taking of their scalps. He and his men join forces with Bridget von Hammersmark, a German actress and undercover agent, to bring down the leaders of the Third Reich. Their fates converge with theater owner Shosanna Dreyfus, who seeks to avenge the Nazis’ execution of her family. The film is notable for the performance of Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa, which allowed for his career to absolutely skyrocket following the release of the film.

We’ve highlighted a couple of films by Noah Baumbach on this list, and as one of our favorite filmmakers working today, we’re eagerly awaiting his next film, Marriage Story, which focuses on a crumbling marriage on the brink of a divorce. Baumbach is no stranger to tackling divorce in his films, however, and in 2005, he released The Squid and the Whale, a semi-autobiographical film that tracks the divorce of Bernard (Jeff Daniels) and Joan (Laura Linney) through the eyes of their two children, Walt (Jesse Eisenberg) and Frank (Owen Kline). While Walt finds himself acting out at school and attracted to his dad’s new fling, younger brother Frank takes his mother’s side, as she begins seeing his tennis coach (William Baldwin). If you’re waiting for Baumbach’s newest take on how divorce can affect us all, it’s well worth revisiting his 2005 classic—it’s one of his best films.

One of the greatest horror films of all time, Bébé au romarin is perfect for a spooky night in. The film follows Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow), who move into an apartment building in New York City with her husband, a struggling actor named Guy (John Cassavetes), despite the apartment building allegedly being haunted. Once moved in, they meet their neighbors Roman and Minnie Castevet, who only add to the odd feeling surrounding the apartment building—especially when Minnie gives Rosemary a pendant as a good luck charm. When Rosemary becomes pregnant, she finds herself increasingly isolated from her husband and her friends. When Rosemary finally delivers her baby, the truth of her reality is revealed.

L’Irlandais arrived in theaters and on Netflix with a deluge of great reviews and even more controversy, as director Martin Scorsese found himself in the hot seat after delivering a critique on superhero films. Mixed press aside, nothing could stop L’Irlandais from becoming one of the best-reviewed films of the year, and now that it’s finally streaming on Netflix, those who didn’t get access to it in their local indie theater can finally stream it for themselves. The film follows truck driver Frank Sheeran starting in the 1950s, as he begins to work for Russell Bufalino and his crime family in Pennsylvania. Sheeran becomes one of their most reliable hitmen, and things get even more complicated when he goes to work for Jimmy Hoffa, the powerful, popular Teamster tied to organized crime. Scorsese teams up with Robert De Niro, his most frequent collaborator, along with Joe Pesci and Al Pacino.

Bien que Drive is, in our opinion, one of the best films of the 2010s, its theatrical release was marred by controversy. After a misleading trailer advertised the film towards an action-focused crowd coming hot off the heels of films like Fast Five, Drive opened to an audience that wasn’t ready for the film’s slow, methodical pacing and quiet protagonist. Of course, if you can accept the film for what it is—a drama with several moments of intense violence—Drive can be an incredibly rewarding watch. The film follows the unnamed Driver (Ryan Gosling), a Hollywood stuntman who also works as a getaway driver for criminals. When the Driver is enlisted in a heist gone wrong, he must risk his own life to protect the lives of his neighbor and her young son. With an all-star supporting cast including Bryan Cranston, Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, and Albert Brooks, Drive is a must-see film.

One of the most inventive and creative blockbusters of the 2010s, Inception was director Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to The Dark Knight, as he cashed in the check from one of the most critically acclaimed superhero films ever made to make an insane big-budget thriller. The film follows Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), a thief who can enter the dreams of his marks in order to steal secrets from their subconscious. Though his skill has made him popular in the world of corporate espionage, it has cost him his family and his access to the United States. Cobb gets a chance at redemption when he is offered a seemingly impossible task: instead of stealing a secret, he has to plant an idea, making it seem as though the mark had it on their own. If he succeeds, he’ll be allowed to return to his home, but the memory of Cobb’s late wife threatens to destroy the mission.

Guy Ritchie has always infused his films with a certain sense of masculine bravado, no matter the subject matter, and that continued with his 2009 adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. Starring Robert Downey Jr., hot off his Hollywood comeback with Homme de fer, Sherlock Holmes is a brand-new take on the detective, following him as he swaggers through London solving crimes. When a string of brutal murders begin to line up, Holmes and his partner Dr. Watson (Jude Law) immediately identify Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) as the killer. But Blackwood has a bigger scheme in mind, and despite an execution for his crimes, Blackwood seemingly rises from the grave. Holmes and Watson are forced to enter a strange new world to solve their latest mystery.

Guillermo Del Toro  has had a hell of a few years, finally winning an Oscar for his most recent drama, The Shape of Water. Prior to that, however, Del Toro received praise for Pan’s Labyrinth, a film that used the same Spanish fairy tale setting as The Shape of Water, while telling a much darker story. Set in Spain during the summer of 1944, the story is intertwined between the real world and a mythical world centered within an overgrown and abandoned labyrinth. Ofelia, the 11-year-old protagonist follows a faun into the forest to escape from her evil stepfather Captain Vidal, and from her increasingly-sick mother. Though the story is fairly simple (as are most fairy tales), the makeup and special effects are to die for.

Few films have as many versions as Blade Runner, Ridley Scott’s 1982 cyberpunk classic, and each version has their fair share of defenders. If you haven’t seen the film before, Blade Runner: The Final Cut is the best place to start. Not only is it the only version of the film in which Ridley Scott had complete creative control in the editing room, but it’s also the version now streaming on Netflix. Dans Blade Runner, Rick Deckard, a former policeman and “blade runner” himself, is detained and brought to his former supervisor. Tasked with hunting down four humanoid replicants who are on Earth illegally, and though he tries to turn down the job, it’s made clear it’s not an option. Deckard quickly realizes he’s in over his head, as the four replicants head out on the run.

Based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel of the same name, The Talented Mr. Ripley was just one of many films that helped cement 1999 as a landmark year in film. The film follows Tom Ripley (Matt Damon), a Manhattan lavatory attendant who wants nothing more than to join the ranks of upper-class society. After borrowing a Princeton jacket to play piano at a garden party, Tom is offered $1,000 from Herbert Greenleaf to head to Italy, in order to convince his son Dickie (Jude Law) to return home. Once he arrives in Italy, Tom grows close to Dickie and his fiancée Marge (Gwenyth Paltrow), following along with the couple’s interests as he enjoys his life in luxury. But when Dickie begins to grow tired of Tom, he’ll do anything to keep the life he feels he’s earned.

Avec Mauvais garçons pour la vie now continuing the saga, it seems like as good a time as any to return to the original film. Bad Boys didn’t just cement Will Smith as an action star—it also allowed director Michael Bay to jump from making music videos to creating some of the biggest, flashiest Hollywood blockbusters ever seen. Bad Boys follows Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Will Smith), two Miami detectives and lifelong friends, who are tasked with investigating $100 million of seized Mafia heroin, once held in a secure police vault, that has since been stolen. Internal Affairs suspects an inside job, and the entire narcotics department is threatened to be shut down unless the drugs are recovered within five days. They’ll have to rely on a call girl (Téa Leoni) in order to solve the case. The 2003 sequel, Bad Boys II, is also streaming.

Did you know Steven Spielberg directed an animated feature produced by Peter Jackson (le Seigneur des Anneaux) and written by Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Baby Driver)? He did, and its even an adaptation of the classic French-European comic series, The Adventures of Tintin. In the film of the same name, we find our boy journalist hero Tintin (Jamie Bell, Billy Elliot) purchasing a miniature ship called the Unicorn, which, unbeknownst to him, contains a parchment scroll that hides the location of sunken treasure. Along with his dog Snowy and the drunken Captain Haddock, Tintin must outrun the criminals after him and the treasure. The film is notable for its motion-capture effects and adopting the style from the comics, giving it a unique look and feel, and for its all-star cast, including Andy Serkis as Haddock, Daniel Craig as Sakharine, and Nick Frost and Simon Pegg as the bumbling detectives Thomson and Thompson.

The second Monty Python film is great on its own—as hilarious as Holy Grail, if a bit less surreal—but what truly makes the film interesting is the amount of controversy surrounding its 1979 release. A religious comedy may (mostly) fly under the radar these days, but forty years ago, Life of Brian was accused of being blasphemous, with thirty-nine local authorities in the United Kingdom either banning the film or imposing an X rating that prevented the film from being shown. Countries like Ireland and Norway banned the film entirely, and many of those bans lasted far past the 1980s. The film follows Brian, a young man born on the same night as Jesus, one stable down. Trying to impress a young rebel named Judith, Brian joins the independence movement against Rome, using teachings he heard from Jesus in an attempt to hide from the Romans. When a crowd mistakes him for the Messiah, he’ll find himself drawing far more attention than he wanted.

Directed by Sofia Coppola, The Bling Ring is a 2013 satirical crime film and the second film ever released by studio A24. The film is based on the true story of the Bling Ring, a gang of young fame-obsessed teenagers living in Los Angeles, as told by Nancy Jo Sales in the 2010 Vanity Fair article “The Suspects Wore Louboutins.” The film is also notable for helping Emma Watson escape the shadow of her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, cementing her as a serious actor who would go onto star in critically-acclaimed films like Noah et Little Women. When Marc Hall enters a new school, he’s quickly befriended by Rebecca Ahn. The two begin using social media to track the location of celebrities, before inviting their friends to empty houses owned by the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, where they party and steal in order to boost their status in high school.

Conducteur de taxi is a landmark film for a dozen or more reasons. It’s one of the best of Martin Scorsese’s storied career; it features Robert De Niro in one of his best roles of his life; the supporting cast is absolutely stacked, including Harvey Keitel, Albert Brooks, Cybil Shepard, and Peter Boyle; and the film established Jodie Foster as a child prodigy in Hollywood. The film follows a loner veteran, Travis Bickle, who was dishonorably discharged from the military following the Vietnam War, as he lives in a decaying and morally bankrupt New York City. Bickle picks up work as a taxi driver, working through the night as he struggles with insomnia. Slowly descending into insanity, Bickle plots to assassinate both a presidential candidate and the pimp of an underage prostitute he befriends at night.

Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane (who also wrote the novel Shutter Island) and directed by Clint Eastwood, Mystic River is one of the best films of 2003, nominated for several Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Director. The film follows Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn), an ex-con whose daughter is murdered. Jimmy is distraught to learn that two of his childhood friends, Dave (Tim Robbins) and Sean (Kevin Bacon), are involved in the murder. While Sean is the homicide detective leading the case to find the murderer, Dave was the last person to see Jimmy’s daughter alive, which eventually leads him to believe Dave is the murderer behind the case.

Perhaps the most famous film ever directed by acclaimed filmmaker Cameron Crowe, Jerry Maguire is, in many ways, a perfect film. Endlessly quotable, featuring incredible performances from its wide cast, and noteworthy for so many reasons, it’s an excellent sports romcom to throw on at any occasion. When Jerry Maguire, a sports agent at a popular firm, writes a memo that gets him fired, he is forced to start his own management firm on his own, with help from single mother Dorothy Boyd. With only a single client to their name—Rod Tidwell, an up and coming football star—Jerry and Dorothy work hard to get their business off the ground.

After stealing $65,000, the two go on the run, but things go sound when Connie’s brother Nick (Benny Safdie) runs from the cops and is sent to jail. Desperate to find bail money for Nick, Connie finds himself in for a rough night.

Though Martin Scorsese is no stranger to the gangster genre—hell, we just listed L’Irlandais above in this list—his work in the genre never got better than Goodfellas, the 1990 crime classic that tells the story of Henry Hill. Based on the Nicholas Pileggi novel Wiseguy, Goodfellas covers 35 years in the life of Hill (Ray Liotta), as he works his way up from a new member of the mob to a leader among men. Despite his life of luxury, Hill finds difficulty in recognizing the horrors that come with his lifestyle. Drug addiction, murder, and a failing marriage all continue to lead to his downfall in 1980. The film has routinely been called one of the best films ever made, and now that it’s back on Netflix, you can rewatch Liotta, Pesci, and De Niro again and again.

Often considered one of the best comedies of all time, jour de la marmotte is absolutely a must-see for film lovers, fans of Bill Murray, or anyone who loves a good comedy. In the film, Murray plays Phil Connors, a local weatherman who is persuaded by his producer Rita (Andie MacDonald) to head out to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania from their home station in Pittsburgh to report on the groundhog day celebrations. Once there, he finds himself trapped in a snowstorm he himself said would miss the area, and after being forced to spend another night in the “hick town” of Punxsutawney, wakes up to find that he’s stuck to repeat Groundhog Day forever. Directed and written by friend and collaborator Harold Ramis, Murray’s deadpan schtick never got better than it did in this masterpiece.

While at Shawshank, the prison he’s been sent to serve his sentences, he forms a friendship with Red (Morgan Freeman), experiences the brutality of prison life, and tries to continue his life throughout 19 years of incarceration.

A masterpiece of filmmaking and one of the best films of this century, Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood is a must-watch, especially since it’s streaming on Netflix. Inspired by Pétrole!, the Upton Sinclair novel, and starring Daniel Day-Lewis as oil tycoon Daniel Plainview, There Will Be Blood is a mystifying, addictive watch that will haunt you long after the credits roll. Once a silver miner now turned oil prospector, Plainview moves to oil-rich California to continue making money. Using his adopted son HW to project a trustworthy, family-man image, Plainview cons local landowners into selling him their properties for a pittance, unaware how valuable they are. When local preacher Eli Sunday suspects Plainview’s motives and intentions, he unintentionally starts a slow-burning feud that threatens both men’s lives.

One of the most influential and important films of 1999 is back on Netflix. La matrice follows Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves), a computer programmer who spends his time hacking online, going by the name Neo. Neo continues to find the phrase “the Matrix” online, leading him to be discovered by a woman named Trinity (Carrie Anne-Moss), who explains that a man named Morpheus can help him understand what’s happening. Presented with two pills by Morpheus, Neo accepts the red pill, forcing him awake from a liquid-pilled pod, before being rescued by Morpheus’s hovercraft. With Neo now realizing that his entire reality has been a shared simulation of the past, he must come to terms with his existence as “The One,” and fight back against the machines that have captured humanity.

Based on a story by famed science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, Minority Report is an action-detective thriller set in Washington D.C. in 2054, where police utilize a psychic technology to arrest and convict murderers before they commit their crime. Tom Cruise plays the head of this PreCrime unit, but is forced to reckon with the power of PreCrime when he himself accused of the future murder of a man he hasn’t even met. Minority Report was one of the best-reviewed films of 2002 and was nominated for several awards, grossing over $350 million worldwide. Both a sci-fi action crowd pleaser and a film that truly brings up some fascinating questions.

David O. Russell found massive critical and commercial success with The Fighter, following years of smaller releases like I Heart Huckabees, and in 2012, he managed to outdo himself again with Livre de jeu Silver Linings. Based on the novel of the same name, the film follows Pat (Bradley Cooper), a man who returns home to his parents (Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver) following eight months of treatment in a mental health facility for bipolar disorder. While at home in Pennsylvania, Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a young widow and the sister of Pat’s friend Ronnie’s wife. The two hit it off in a diner while talking about their medication, and the two agree to help each other with their individual goals: reconnecting with Pat’s ex-wife Nikki, and entering a dance competition with Tiffany. The film received eight Oscar nominations, and Jennifer Lawrence won for Best Actress.

Meanwhile, the film flashes forward in time to two different lawsuits Zuckerberg is involved with: one with fellow Harvard students Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss (Armie Hammer), who accuse him of stealing the website, and one with his former best friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), who accuses Zuckerberg of unfairly diluting his shares in the company after he was pushed out.
